Description: Speaking the truth in love—it’s a phrase that is both overused and misunderstood. Is speaking the truth in love really necessary? Is it simply an excuse to confront the behavior in other people’s lives? Paul teaches us that maturing in our faith and avoiding deceit is never a solo effort. Jesus gave us gifts to strengthen each other and—at times—to confront each other. But the same dysfunction in our hearts that makes the gift of honest dialogue necessary is a constant threat to those interactions. When it comes to speaking the truth in love, our message and our motivation must be in sync. How can that happen? Only through a deeper belief in the gospel and greater dependence on the Spirit.
